Chicago residents get taste of Turkish culture at three-day festival
Chicago got a taste of Turkish culture over Memorial Day weekend at a festival showcasing traditional cuisine, art and performances.
For cousins Wendy and Laila, going to the Turkish Festival was an opportunity to get in touch with their family’s roots.
One woman told Turkey’s Anadolu news agency that her father is from Erzurum, a city in eastern Türkiye, so she wanted to be connected to Turkish culture.
Many attendees at the event were motivated by the desire to learn about new cultures.
One woman from Waukesha County in Wisconsin drove for two hours to attend the festival, held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center.
It showcased 230 stands including traditional art techniques such as water marbling, copper working and woodblock printing.
It also featured performances by jazz flutist Kamilah Furqaan, Turkish musician Fatih Koca, Macedonian singer of Turkish descent Mesut Kurtis and Moldovan singer Leonida Timus.
