Former US military official calls Afghan war a strategic failure
Former senior military official Gen. Mark Milley has labeled the two-decade-long US-led war against the Taliban in Afghanistan a “strategic failure.”
During his testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee this week, Milley highlighted the inability to establish a nation despite building an army and state infrastructure.
He discussed the collapse of the U.S.-supported Afghan government and the Taliban’s takeover of the capital Kabul in August 2021.
President Joe Biden announced full U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan by Sept. 11, 2021, the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that triggered the conflict.
Milley defended the military’s efforts in providing hope and opportunity to Afghans.
However, he criticized the decision-making process leading to the withdrawal of American troops, blaming the State Department and White House.
Milley also expressed uncertainty about the number of Americans left behind post-withdrawal.
This testimony sheds light on the challenges and consequences of America’s longest war and its recent conclusion.
