‘Biggest single-day loss in Israeli history’: At least 700 killed in Hamas attacks
At least 700 Israelis have been killed as a result of Hamas attacks on Israel, local media reported on Sunday.
A BBC news anchor said it is “the biggest single-day loss of life in Israeli history.”
The anchor also said more than 100 Israelis had been taken hostage and were inside Gaza.
BBC also quoted Israeli officials as saying that more than 260 bodies were found at what had been the venue for a music concert at a settlement called Re’im near the border with Gaza.
CNN quoted an Israeli official as saying that several dozens of Americans were among the hostages taken into Gaza.
About 36 hours after Hamas attack began, Israel formally declared war.
More than 2,100 Israelis have also been injured as its army continues to face off against Palestinian fighters, the Times of Israel news website reported, citing a health official.
Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, the Palestinian group that governs the Gaza Strip, launched on Saturday Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, saying the surprise attack on Israel was in response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence. It said it fired rockets and captured many Israelis.
In retaliation, the Israeli army initiated Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Israel has declared a state of war.
