Right-wing Republicans file motion to remove speaker
Resolution to remove McCarthy from office came after he relied on Democratic votes to pass a new spending bill
WASHINGTON – In a dramatic turn of events, Representative Matt Gaetz has filed a motion to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his leadership position.
This paves the way for an unprecedented intra-party conflict within the Republican Party.
The resolution to remove McCarthy from office came after he relied on Democratic votes to pass a new spending bill.
Gaetz and other right-leaning Republicans had warned against the move.
The move is a historic milestone, as it is the first real attempt in more than a century to force a vote to remove a House speaker using this particular legislative tool.
The chances of success are uncertain, however, as some allied with Gaetz are reluctant to support the move, including Rep. Thomas Massie, who called it a “really bad idea”
In response to the motion, McCarthy remains focused on his duties and dismisses any alleged side deals.
