Concern over escalating religious intolerance in India
A statement submitted to USCIRF by 6 major civil rights groups highlights the disturbing increase in violence against religious minorities
WASHINGTON – Six major civil rights organizations in the U.S. have joined together to highlight the growing religious intolerance in India.
The coalition voiced its concerns at a key hearing of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).
They called on the Biden administration to recognize and address escalating religious intolerance in India.
A statement submitted to USCIRF highlighted the disturbing increase in violence against religious minorities.
Sunita Viswanath, executive director of Hindus for Human Rights, represented the coalition, which also includes the Dalit Solidarity Forum, the Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations, Hindus for Human Rights, the Indian American Muslim Council, India Civil Watch International, and the New York State Council of Churches.
Safa Ahmed of the Indian American Muslim Council presented written testimony vividly describing the atrocities Muslims face daily in India.
The joint statement read by Viswanath highlighted the increasing oppression of minority groups in India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It expressed concern about the Biden government’s perceived indifference to religious persecution in India.
The statement pointed to disturbing developments in states such as Manipur and Uttarakhand that show a rise in violence and intolerance.
