Wisconsin Republicans faces lawsuit over attempt to fire election official
MADISON, Wisconsin – Wisconsin Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul has filed a lawsuit challenging Republican senators’ attempt to fire election official Meagan Wolfe.
The senators’ action was challenged on the grounds that they lacked authority.
The Senate vote, which was 22-11 and strictly along party lines, is seen by many as an attempt to give more control over elections to those who dispute the credibility of the election results and spread conspiracy theories.
After the 2020 presidential election, in which President Joe Biden won a narrow victory over former President Donald Trump in Wisconsin, Wolfe faced criticism from Republicans who repeated Trump’s unsubstantiated accusations of voter fraud.
Although her term ended July 1, the three Democratic members of the Wisconsin Board of Elections were reluctant to reappoint her, fearing a lack of confirmation from Republican senators.
Despite warnings from their legal counsel and the state’s Democratic attorney general, Republican senators, led by Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, continued to vote against Wolfe.
Josh Kaul explained that the real story is not the Senate vote, but the open defiance of state law to foment baseless attacks against Democratic institutions.
According to the Wisconsin Legislative Council, Wolfe has no formal legal recourse against her removal, so her only recourse is legal action.
The dispute comes at a time when Wisconsin is preparing for an upcoming election.
Biden is running for a second term, while Trump leads the Republican race despite numerous criminal charges and allegations of his possible ineligibility due to the events of Jan. 6, 2021.
The Wisconsin attorney general, who filed a complaint in Dane County Circuit Court, said that “the story today is not what the Senate has purported to do with its vote. It’s that the Senate has blatantly disregarded state law in order to put its full stamp of approval on the ongoing baseless attacks on our democracy.”
