Pakistani origin doctor sentenced to 18 years in prison for terrorism
U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota alleged that Masood, a licensed physician from Pakistan, used an encrypted messaging app to contact ISIS
SAINT PAUL, Minnesota – Pakistani origin medical practitioner Mohammad Masood, 31, was sentenced to 18 years in prison for terrorism.
A former employee of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, he pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to a foreign organization designated as terrorist.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota alleged that Masood, a licensed physician from Pakistan, used an encrypted messaging app to contact ISIS and expressed a desire to carry out “lone wolf” attacks in the United States.
Court documents show Masood was hired by the Mayo Clinic in January 2020 as a research coordinator on an H-1B visa.
He was found to be making plans to travel to Syria via Jordan to join ISIS.
However, his plans were thwarted by the closure of the borders due to the pandemic COVID.
He then attempted to travel to Los Angeles to meet someone who could arrange his transportation on a cargo ship to the area controlled by ISIS. He was apprehended on March 19, 2020.
Masood’s conviction followed an investigation by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force.
