Pakistan celebrates 76th Independence Day

ISLMABAD, Pakistan – Pakistan celebrated its 76th Independence Day with great fervor and various ceremonies were conducted throughout the country.
A flag hoisting ceremony was held at the Convention Center in Islamabad with President Dr. Arif Alvi as the chief guest.
President Alvi called for unity and adherence to the principles of the state’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah – “unity, faith and discipline” – and stressed the need for forgiveness and the adoption of core Islamic values.
He urged progress through merit principles, justice and women’s participation in the economy.
President Alvi also stressed the importance of education and called for support for the 27 million children who are not in school.
Dr. Alvi also lamented the Islamophobic incidents in Western countries, referring to the numerous recent desecrations of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark.
He reiterated the commitment to fight terrorism and raised the Kashmir issue, calling for international attention as per UN resolutions.
He also reiterated the need for national unity to address social, political, economic and security challenges.
“Let us resolve that we will not hesitate to make any sacrifice for the security, prosperity and development of the country,” the president said.
Former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Pakistan’s achievements, but stressed that the country’s story is not yet complete.
The military leadership stressed that it wanted to preserve peace, unity and social harmony and promised to defend the country’s integrity.
Former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari highlighted the vision of a prosperous Pakistan for all and stressed unity and victory over divisive politics.
Meanwhile, the military leadership called on the nation to preserve and strengthen peace, social harmony and unity of the nation, Radio Pakistan reported.
“We should pledge on this day that regardless of the challenges we face today, we will preserve and strengthen the peace, social harmony and unity of the nation,” a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations said.
