Academics accuse American Jewish community of ignoring Israeli apartheid
WASHINGTON – As many as 750 academics have criticized the American Jewish community for ignoring Israeli “apartheid” and ethnic cleansing.
A letter signed by notable academics such as Benny Morris, David Myers, Dov Waxman, Shaul Magid and Daniel Levy called on the leaders of American Jews to recognize the concept of apartheid in Israel.
They wondered that the same Jewish community in the U.S. supports progressive causes in the U.S. but is closed off to Israeli actions.
They urged Jewish leaders to work to limit U.S. military aid in the occupied Palestinian territories and to end Israeli impunity in international organizations.
The letter stresses that a legitimate outcome should include equal rights for all, regardless of whether it is a one-state or two-state solution.
The signatories call for a focus on equal rights for Jews and Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories.
The letter highlights problems such as ethnic cleansing, the murder of Palestinians and the growth of what they call “Jewish supremacy”
The signatories, who come from diverse backgrounds, call on American Jews to support human rights organizations that advocate for Palestinians and to oppose the occupation.
This letter differs significantly from the political stance of certain American politicians who continue to support Israel’s policies.
