Senator Hollen urges action against racist Israeli actions
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen has called on President Joe Biden to take stronger action against what he considers “racist” Israeli actions in the West Bank.
Van Hollen, who recently visited the region, criticized U.S. military support for Israel’s annexation of parts of the occupied territories.
He also opposed U.S. support that encourages violence by Israeli settlers.
He argued that this, along with White House inaction, strengthens the far-right faction of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Van Hollen also suggested investigating whether Israel has violated the Leahy Law on human rights abuses by foreign military personnel receiving U.S. aid.
He called on Biden to get personally involved and make clear that U.S. military aid should not support settler violence or settlement expansion.
The Senator accused the Israel Defense Forces of overlooking or cooperating with attacks on Palestinian communities.
While acknowledging the need to support Israel against threats from Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah, he criticized the lack of respect shown to the United States by certain far-right Israeli leaders.
Van Hollen condemned the actions of certain ministers who violate Palestinian rights.
He also pointed to growing opposition in the U.S. and abroad to support for the current Israeli government, with some drawing parallels to apartheid in South Africa.
