Nigerian artist’s Barbie doll celebrates Muslim culture
LAGOS, Nigeria – A Nigerian artist has created a hijab-wearing Barbie doll that celebrates Muslim culture.
Haneefah Adam has named the doll “Hijarbie.”
She started the project in 2015 after becoming angry about the lack of modest clothing and hijabs on social media.
She received overwhelmingly positive feedback for Hijarbie. Many people praised her for portraying Muslim women in a positive light.
She also noted that the portrayal of women wearing a hijab has improved since she created this doll.
Adam looks forward to seeing more Barbies wearing a hijab in the future. She believes diversity is important and that dolls should represent all of us.
Adam has designed over 70 garments that celebrate Muslim fashion and culture.
She has also designed a series of dolls based on famous Muslim women, such as Malala Yousafzai and Ibtihaj Muhammad.
