Afghan refugees in U.K. at risk of homelessness
LONDON – Afghan refugees living in the U.K. are at risk of homelessness after the government began evicting them from hotels.
It is feared that refugees who cannot find long-term accommodation will become homeless.
All 8,000 Afghans currently living in hotels were served eviction notices in May.
Local governments are expected to come under significant pressure as they are already dealing with 104,510 households in emergency shelters.
The government had given refugees three months’ notice to help them find long-term housing.
The government has allocated £285 million in new funding to support the resettlement process.
However, according to experts, this may not be enough to meet the need.
Veterans Affairs Minister Johnny Mercer said the hotels were never intended to be permanent.
Afghan families arrived in the United Kingdom after the Taliban took over the country in 2021.
The Afghan resettlement program officially opened in January 2022 and was primarily for the resettlement of Afghans supporting the British effort in Afghanistan.
According to U.K. officials, approximately 24,600 individuals have been resettled to safety under this program.
