2 women charged with hate crimes in Milwaukee for attacks on Muslim women
MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – Two women are charged with hate crimes after they were caught on video attacking two women wearing hijabs in Milwaukee, a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.
The victims said they believed they were attacked because of their appearance.
The incident occurred July 30 in Cathedral Square Park.
The victims said the two women, Miracle Reed and Payton Smith, approached their picnic table and asked them if they had a problem.
When the victims answered in the negative, one of the women put one of the victims in a headlock and began hitting him on the head.
The other woman punched the other victim in the back of the head and neck.
The attack was captured on cell phone video, which shows one of the attackers throwing several punches. One of these blows appears to land directly on the victim’s head.
Police quickly arrived on scene and arrested Reed and Smith.
Reed is charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and bail jumping. Smith is charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
The attack has been condemned by community leaders who call it a hate crime.
They are demanding justice for the victims.
