Water crisis in southeastern Iran worsens
TEHRAN, Iran – Residents of Iran’s Sistan-Baluchistan province are protesting agiainst the water crisis in the region.
Protesters demanded that President Ebrahim Raisi visit the region and urged the establishment of a High Council to address the crisis.
The water crisis has also negatively impacted the region’s agricultural and industrial development.
The severity of the water crisis has led to climate-induced migration, with some 10,000 households having moved from Zabol and the surrounding area.
The situation in southeastern Iran mirrors a general problem across the country, where water shortages are becoming more common and leading to protests.
Experts point out that droughts and floods have affected food security in the country.
The Iranian Meteorological Organization estimates that 97 percent of the country is experiencing some form of drought, highlighting the severity and extent of the water crisis.
