Palestinians in East Jerusalem go on strike to protest Israeli attacks on Jenin
JENIN, PALESTINE – Palestinians in East Jerusalem observed a strike, in protest against Israeli attacks on the Jenin refugee camp.
Shops were closed in the old city of Jerusalem. There were also demonstrations and calls for an end to the violence.
The Israeli attacks in Jenin have killed at least 11 Palestinians and injured 100 others.
The Palestinian Health Ministry said that the attacks have also caused widespread damage to homes and property in the camp.
Türkiye’s Anadolu reporter on the ground quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the Israeli army continued its attacks on the Jenin refugee camp.
The reporter added that the Israeli military aircraft continues to fly over Jenin amid sounds of explosions from time to time.
Jenin’s Deputy Governor Kamal Abu al-Rub said the residents of the camp have started fleeing to safer places.
He added that the camp’s population is around 15,000 and the evacuation is carried out gradually in coordination with relevant bodies.
Palestinian Red Crescent Society has opened its centers and buildings to host the camp’s fleeing residents.
Palestinian official said the scenes remind of the Nakba in 1948, when nearly 800,000 Palestinians were forced to leave their homes.
The strike in East Jerusalem is the latest sign of growing anger among Palestinians over the Israeli attacks in Jenin.
The attacks have sparked international condemnation, with the U.N. calling for an immediate end to the violence.
The Israeli government has defended the attacks, saying that they are necessary to prevent Palestinian terrorism.
However, Palestinians and human rights groups have accused Israel of using excessive force and targeting civilians.
The violence in Jenin is the latest escalation in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
