Trump told he is subject to criminal investigation for handling classified documents
WASHINGTON – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has been informed that he is under investigation for his handling of classified information after leaving office.
This means that the former president is likely to be charged as part of the investigation.
According to ABC News, Trump was informed by the office of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith in a letter.
Smith was appointed in November to lead the investigation into classified documents.
The investigation is looking into allegations that Trump possessed secret documents at his Florida residence.
He was found to have more than 300 documents with classified markings at Mar-a-Lago, his private club and residence in Florida.
Prosecutors are also investigating allegations that Trump prevented federal authorities from accessing and retrieving those documents.
Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social, that he had not been informed that he was under indictment.
He said he did nothing wrong.
He accused him of being “the target of weaponized Justice Department and FBI”
According to sources cited by ABC News, Trump’s lawyers met with Justice Department officials on Monday.
Smith is also investigating the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Meanwhile, Trump has also been indicted in New York City, where he is accused of falsifying business records in 34 cases.
Those charges relate to the payment of hush money to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the closing stages of the 2016 presidential campaign.
