Maryland Parents protest ending choice to avoid sexuality related topics
ROCKVILLE, Maryland – More than 400 parents have protested in Rockville, Maryland, for making children study human sexuality and family life at an early age.
Previously, families had the option to opt out of these topics.
The new curriculum covers sexuality and gender identity topics from preschool through eighth grade.
According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations families were previously informed in advance about the teaching of topics related to their religious beliefs.
Parents argued that the topics of sexual orientation and gender identity were introduced too early.
The schools abruptly changed their parental notification policy beginning in March.
Organizers of the protest said they understood that they lived in a divergent society where people had different orientations.
But they said there should be an opportunity to opt out when it comes to teaching children about sex at an early age.
Three families sued the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) board and superintendent over the updated curriculum.
They argued that the lack of an opt-out option violated their First Amendment rights.
