Iranian embassy in Saudi Arabia reopens after 7 years
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Iran reopened its embassy in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Tuesday after seven years.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Alireza Bigdeli and Iran’s representative in Jeddah Hassan Zarnagar Abargoui were present on the occasion.
Iran also reopened its consulate in the Saudi port city of Jeddah.
The reopening of Iranian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia was announced Monday by Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani.
Iranian and Saudi top diplomats met recently on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in South Africa.
The two Persian Gulf countries had agreed to resume diplomatic relations in March after two years of negotiations brokered by Iraq and Oman.
China brokered the latest round of talks, which were followed by a meeting of foreign ministers in Beijing in April.
Saudi Arabia is also reportedly preparing to reopen its diplomatic missions in Iran.
The plan has not yet been finalized.
Saudi Arabia had closed its embassy in Tehran and consulate in Mashhad in January 2016 after an angry mob attacked them.
The incident occurred after the execution of prominent Saudi Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr.
Late last month, Iran appointed veteran diplomat Alireza Enayati as its new ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
He headed the Persian Gulf Department in Iran’s Foreign Ministry and previously served as Iran’s envoy to Kuwait.
