Law graduate becomes target for speaking out against Israeli atrocities
NEW YORK – Yemeni-American law graduate Fatima Mohammed has become a target of Republicans and Democrats for her criticism of Israel.
In her 12-minute speech at the City College of New York (CUNY) School of Law, Mohammed addressed atrocities against Palestinians.
She said Israel continues to rain bullets and bombs indiscriminately on believers.
She added that even funerals and cemeteries are not spared and that it encourages lynch mobs to attack Palestinian homes and businesses.
Former Republican candidate for governor Lee Zeldin called the speech “rabid anti-Semitism.”
Mayor Eric Adams called them “words of negativity and division.”
Another Republican senator, Ted Cruz of Texas, described the speech as a “public expression of hatred against people and communities based on their religion, race or political affiliation.”
Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres called the hijab-wearing graduate student “crazy.”
Fatima, however, has found support among Palestinian advocacy groups.
They say the campaign against her is the latest installment of attacks against Palestine advocates.
Palestine advocates in the U.S. often face accusations of anti-Semitism.
The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) denounced what it called a “silencing of voices.”
An anti-occupation group also praised Mohammed and accused her critics of using Islamophobic tropes to “put down” and slander the young woman.
