Russia puts U.S. senator on wanted list over Ukraine remarks
MOSCOW – Angered by his remarks during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russia said it had opened a criminal case against U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
According to the state news agency TASS, Moscow called his remarks “Russophobic”
During a meeting with Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Friday, Graham was recorded in an edited video saying: “The Russians are dying … The best money we have ever spent.”
The TASS report said investigators from the Russian Investigative Committee would “evaluate the case in a legally sound manner.”
After Russian criticism, Ukraine released a full video of the interaction, showing that the two remarks were not linked.
A Kremlin spokesman said it was a shame for the U.S. to have such senators.
Taking to Twitter, Graham said he had praised the spirit of Ukrainians in resisting Russia’s invasion with U.S. assistance.
“To know that my commitment to Ukraine has drawn the ire of [President Vladimir] Putin’s regime brings me immense joy,” Graham posted.
He also challenged Russian authorities to pursue their case at the International Criminal Court.
The UN court has previously issued an arrest warrant for Putin.
