Türkiye nabs ISIS militant trying to cross border illegally
ANKARA (AA) – Türkiye has nabbed an ISIS militant while he was trying to enter the country from Syria illegally. The man was wanted on an Interpol red notice, the Turkish National Defense Ministry said.
The Turkish Armed Forces, in a joint operation with the gendarmerie, carried out a “successful” operation near the southern Hatay province bordering Syria to capture the militant known only by the initial ‘M. M.’
“The person in question was successfully caught trying to infiltrate our country,” it added.
In 2013, Türkiye became one of the first countries to declare Daesh/ISIS a “terrorist” organization.
The country has since been attacked by the group multiple times, leading to heavy losses for the country, triggering an array of military operations by Turkiye, to root out the presence of the group in neighbouring Syria and Iraq.
