Shia, Sunni Muslims Demonstrate Unity in Albuquerque tragedy
Aftab Hussein, a Shia Muslim, and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, a Sunni-run Muslim, both prayed in the same masjid. Both of their funeral services took place together at the same the Islamic Center of New Mexico on Friday, Aug 5th. Albuquerque, New Mexico which is a Sunni run mosque. Both were buried side by side in the same graveyard. Both were Pakistani immigrants.
Police have arrested an Afghan immigrant, Muhammad Syed, 51. He is charged with two of the killings after being arrested while driving a Volkswagen Jetta that the authorities believe was used in at least one of the attacks, the police said.
The authorities said Mr. Syed was being charged in the death of Aftab Hussein, 41, on July 26, and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27, on Aug. 1 while other deaths are still being investigated.
Muhammad Afzaal Hussain attended the University of New Mexico. He had become president of its graduate student association before going into city planning, becoming Land-Use Director for the city of Española. Aftab Hussein worked at a local cafe.
