Thousands Of Demonstrators In DC Demand Economic Justice
On Saturday, advocacy groups and thousands of people from low-income communities gathered in Washington, D.C. to demand policymakers “fight poverty, not the poor.”
The demonstration was led by the Poor People’s Campaign.
The Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, co-chair of the campaign, said “we are the 140 million poor and low-wealth people” who won’t be silent anymore.
Campaign co-chair Bishop William Barber echoed that message in a speech at the Mass Poor People’s and Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly and Moral March.
Barber spoke against essential workers being treated like they are “expendable” during a public health crisis and federal lawmakers blocking pandemic relief for families.
He also called out the stealing of native lands and unjust immigration, and said millions of people nationwide are facing hunger and homelessness.
