Organization Bringing Back ” Environmental Spirit Of Islam”
During Ramadan, many Muslims fast from dawn until sunset.
To break the fast, Muslims often gather together for communal meals, known as iftar.
But iftars can sometimes generate a lot of waste such as disposable silverware and serving items.
To combat that problem, a group of 15 Muslims in Washington, D.C., decided to throw an environmentally friendly iftar.
That movement, started in 2007, has grown into a national organization committed to helping Muslims live “in the environmental spirit of Islam.”
Green Muslims strives to connect Muslims with nature and environmental stewardship.
The organization runs its own youth programming, hosts speakers, and provides educational materials, such as tips for hosting zero-waste iftars.
