UN Envoy Makes First Trio To Yemen Capital After Truce
On Monday, United Nations special envoy Hans Grundberg began his first official visit to Yemen’s rebel-held capital Sanaa.
Grundberg’s arrival comes after an April 2 ceasefire that the country’s warring parties have accused each other of violating.
The Swedish diplomat is scheduled to meet Huthi rebel officials during the visit.
Grundberg’s office tweeted that he was looking forward to engaging with the Huthi leadership on implementing and strengthening the truce.”
Iran-backed Huthi insurgents took control of Sanaa in 2014.
It prompted a Saudi-led coalition’s military intervention the following year.
The conflict has triggered what the U.N. calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
A two-month ceasefire declared at the start of Ramadan has largely held.
