Google Bans App Harvesting Muslim Data For US Defense Contractor
Google recently banned more than a dozen Android apps from its Play Store, including Muslim prayer apps with 10 million-plus downloads.
Researchers discovered secret data-harvesting code hidden within the apps.
That code was engineered by a company linked to a Virginia defense contractor.
The company had paid developers to incorporate its code into their apps to steal users’ data.
The code, a software development kit, could be described as malware, one researcher said.
