13 Australian Academics Quit Over Indian Interference
A group of Australian academics has quit the Australia India Institute at Melbourne University citing concerns for academic freedom.
The group alleged interference by the Indian High Commission.
A March 29 letter signed by 13 affiliated fellow scholars claims the Indian High Commissioner to Australia intervened in the institute’s activities.
It noted repeated instances where research or views unflattering to the image of India had been blanked.
The letter was sent to Vice-Chancellor Duncan Maskell.
The academics claim there was a reluctance to publicize commentary on caste and race.
They wrote that official events “carried the flavor of propaganda.”
They said events on India “likely to be controversial” have been discouraged.
