U.S. Supreme Court Knocks Down Wisconsin State Legislative Map
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled last week that Wisconsin’s legislative maps, that would have increased the number of Black-majority districts, were unconstitutional.
Democratic Governor Tony Evers proposed the maps, which were approved in a 4-3 ruling by the state’s Supreme Court.
They increased Black-majority state assembly districts from six to seven, and were opposed by state Republicans, who said they were racially gerrymandered.
The federal court tossed the maps in an unsigned order, saying the state supreme court didn’t answer whether “a race-neutral alternative” would deny Black voters “equal political opportunity.”
It said the rationale put forward by the lower court did not follow Supreme Court precedents in making its judgment, which “cannot stand.”
