8-year-old migrant girl dies in U.S. custody in Texas
AUSTIN, Texas – An eight-year-old migrant girl died Wednesday in the custody of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The child and her family were being held at a U.S. Border Patrol station.
CBP confirmed the girl’s death in a statement. They said the girl had suffered a medical emergency and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
CBP said the agency had opened an investigation into the girl’s death.
Just a week earlier, a teenage migrant from Honduras died in state custody in the state of Florida.
The incidents coincide with the repeal of the pandemic-era Title 42 immigration policy. That policy authorized the U.S. to quickly turn away migrants encountered at the border with Mexico.
It was enacted by former President Donald Trump in March 2020 and expired on May 11.
