6 policemen killed in ISIS attack in Iraq
BAGHDAD (AA) – Six Iraqi policemen were killed Wednesday in an attack by the ISIS in northern Iraq, local media reported.
ISIS attacked a federal police checkpoint near the city of Samarra, the local Alsumaria TV reported.
Seven policemen were also injured in the attack.
A statement by the Interior Ministry said a security delegation has been dispatched to the area to launch an investigation into the attack.
The statement vowed to bring the perpetrators of the attack to accountability.
In 2017, Iraq declared victory over ISIS, saying it had reclaimed all of its territories – about a third of the country’s area – invaded by the group in 2014.
But the group still maintains sleeper cells in large areas of Iraq and periodically launches attacks. The Iraqi forces continue to carry out operations against the group in parts of the country.
