40 female students suspended in Iran for dress code violations
TEHRAN, Iran – At least 40 female students have been temporarily suspended from classes in Iran for allegedly violating the dress code.
The incident occurred at the University of Arts in Tehran.
The ban came after the government increased pressure on universities to comply with the dress code.
Protests had recently erupted in Iran after a young woman, Mahsa Amini, was taken into police custody for violating the headscarf requirement.
The University of Arts has been trying to enforce the mandatory dress code.
According to reports, female students at Shahid Beheshti College have also been warned that violating the head-covering regulations may result in punitive measures.
According to the HRANA news agency, at least 700 college students were arrested during the recent unrest as the government seeks to suppress dissent.
