37 million people at risk of extreme heat in U.S
TORONTO (AA) – Nearly 37 million people in the U.S. are at risk of dangerous heat.
According to forecasts released Tuesday by the National Weather Service, extreme temperatures will continue to affect the region from the Pacific Northwest to the deserts in the Southwest.
The heat wave will extend further into Florida in the Southeast.
The service urged about 37 million residents in the affected regions to protect themselves from the rising temperatures.
The extreme temperatures will continue through the end of the week, and there could be an increase in heat-related illnesses.
Last year, Phoenix, the capital of the southwestern state of Arizona, recorded 43 degrees Celsius for nine consecutive days.
This year, such temperatures are expected to last twice as long as last year.
The temperature in Phoenix is expected to remain at 45 degrees Celsius through July 17. In Florida, the mercury will reach 43 degrees by July 16.
In El Paso, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico in the southern United States, the temperature rose above 42 degrees Celsius for the first time since 1951.
On July 6, which was declared the “hottest day on earth,” the average global temperature reached 17.2 degrees Celsius.
