2 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in West Bank
JENIN, Palestine (AA/AFP) – Israeli troops killed two Palestinians in a raid on a refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.
“The two martyrs, Adham Jabarin and Jawad Bawaqna, were killed by the occupation bullets during the storming of the Jenin camp,” official Palestine TV reported.
A special force of the Israeli army stormed the camp in the early hours of Thursday morning, eyewitnesses told Anadolu. Other military reinforcements arrived later.
Clashes erupted between the Israeli army and Palestinians who were trying to stop the incursion.
The Palestinian health ministry said Jawad Farid Bawaqna was killed by a bullet to the chest, while Adham Mohammed Bassem Jabareen, 28, was hit in the upper abdomen by Israeli fire.
The Islamic Jihad group identified Jabareen as a member.
Bawaqna was a sports teacher and youth leader in Jenin refugee camp, the province’s deputy governor said.
There were conflicting reports on Bawaqna’s age, with the health ministry putting it at 57, while Palestinian official news agency Wafa said it was 58.
The Israeli army said that during “counterterrorism activity in the Jenin (refugee) camp, armed Palestinian gunmen fired heavily at the security forces, who responded with live fire. Hits were identified”.
“Explosive devices were also hurled at the forces. The soldiers apprehended one wanted individual suspected of involvement in terrorist activity and confiscated an M16 rifle, rifle parts, military equipment, explosive materials and ammunition,” the army added.
A soldier was “lightly injured during the operation and evacuated to a hospital for further medical treatment,” it said.
The deaths raise the number of Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank this month to 17, according to an AFP tally.
A surge in violence in 2022 made it the deadliest year in the West Bank since United Nations records began in 2005.
At least 200 Palestinians were killed across the Palestinian territories last year, according to AFP figures.
The majority of deaths were in the West Bank, although the toll also includes 49 Palestinians killed in a three-day conflict in Gaza.
