2 dead in Virginia shootout after high school graduation ceremony
RICHMOND, Virginia – Two people were killed and five others wounded in a shooting at a Virginia high school Tuesday night.
Police identified a 19-year-old suspect as the shooter.
He reportedly fired into a crowd after a high school graduation ceremony in the city of Richmond, Virginia.
The dead are a student and his stepfather.
Videos show hundreds of people, many of whom were wearing graduation robes, running for safety.
The suspect, identified as Omari Pollard, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
“As they heard the gunfire, it was obviously chaos. We had hundreds of people in Monroe Park, so people scattered. It was very chaotic at the scene,” a police officer told TV channels.
He called the attacker’s behavior “disgusting and cowardly”, since his dispute appeared to be with just one person.
Police said the shooting was “targeted” and “the “result of an ongoing dispute.”
According to the Gun Violence Archives, there have already been more than 200 mass shootings in the U.S. this year.
