This is latest in series of Quran burnings in Sweden that have been condemned by religious leaders and human rights groups
STOCKHOLM, Sweden – Swedish police on Sunday arrested 15 people who tried to stop Salwan Momika from burning a copy of the Muslim holy book.
The incident occurred in a Muslim-majority area of Malmoe and sparked a protest.
Protesters threw stones and bottles at police and at Momika, who is an Iraqi refugee living in Stockholm.
Police removed Momika from the scene and arrested 15 protesters.
This is the latest in a series of Quran burnings in Sweden that have been condemned by religious leaders and human rights groups.
The Swedish government has stated that it will not tolerate such acts, but has so far been unable to prevent them.
The Quran is the holy book of Islam and is considered sacred by Muslims. Burning a copy of the Quran is considered a highly offensive act.
The ongoing Quran burnings in Sweden have raised concerns about the security situation in the country.
Swedish security services have stated that the burnings have worsened the country’s security.
